Summer Art Classes for Adults in Kitchener: Watercolor, Pastels, Sketching & Mixed Media

There is a saying that summer is a small life.

In Canada, it feels especially true.

After months of winter, summer arrives with blooming gardens, longer days, vibrant colours, and a renewed energy to explore, create, and enjoy experiences that don't fit so easily into the colder months.

Summer has always been my favourite season for creativity. Nature is full of inspiration, flowers are everywhere, and there is something special about spending a warm evening learning, making, and creating with your own hands.

When we draw or paint, we slow down enough to notice the world around us more carefully — the shapes of flowers, the colours of a sunset, the texture of leaves, the play of light and shadow. Art becomes a way of observing, exploring, and experiencing everyday moments more deeply.

This summer at Yulia ArtSpace in Downtown Kitchener, I'm inviting adults to explore a variety of artistic materials and techniques while enjoying the creative process in a welcoming studio environment.

A Unique Summer Format

Available only during the summer season, this special format allows students to explore different art materials, techniques, and creative approaches from class to class.

Rather than focusing on a single medium, each session introduces a new artistic experience. It's an opportunity to experiment, discover favorite materials, and develop confidence while learning new skills in a supportive environment.

Whether you're completely new to art or already have creative experience, these classes are designed to help you learn, explore, and enjoy the creative process without pressure.

Summer Creative Schedule

🎨 July 7 – Sketching & Colored Pencils

🎨 July 21 – Soft Pastels

🎨 July 27 – Watercolor, Watercolor Pencils & Pens

🎨 August 11 – Oil Pastels

🎨 August 18 – Acrylic Painting

🎨 August 25 – Mixed Media & Collage

Every class introduces a different project, different techniques, and a new way of working creatively.

Sketching & Colored Pencils

Colored pencils are one of the most accessible and versatile drawing materials. In this class, we'll explore observation, layering, texture, and techniques that help create depth and richness in drawings.

Soft Pastels

Soft pastels are loved for their vibrant color and painterly appearance. They allow artists to blend colors directly on paper and create beautiful atmospheric effects that are difficult to achieve with many other materials.

Watercolor, Watercolor Pencils & Pens

Combining watercolor, watercolor pencils, and waterproof pens creates expressive artwork full of texture, movement, and personality. This approach is often used in travel sketching and urban sketching because it combines drawing and painting in a flexible and enjoyable way.

Watch a watercolor tutorial and read steps in the blog post:

Oil Pastels

Oil pastels are known for their rich color, bold marks, and expressive qualities. They're a wonderful medium for beginners because they allow artists to focus on color, shape, and composition without worrying about complicated technical processes.

Acrylic Painting

Acrylics are one of the most popular painting mediums because they are versatile, vibrant, and beginner-friendly. In this class, students will learn simple painting techniques while creating a finished artwork they can proudly take home.

Mixed Media & Collage

Mixed media encourages experimentation, layering, texture, and creative play. It combines different materials and approaches, allowing artists to work more intuitively while exploring personal ideas and visual storytelling.

Structure + Freedom

At Yulia ArtSpace, classes are built around a simple philosophy: structure and freedom.

Each session combines art fundamentals, clear demonstrations, and step-by-step guidance with opportunities for experimentation, personal choices, and creative expression.

Students learn practical skills while still having space to explore materials, build confidence, and enjoy the creative process in their own way.

Throughout the summer we'll practice:

— Composition and focal points— Color mixing and color relationships— Observation and artistic decision-making— Working with different textures and materials— Building creative confidence through practice

Why Creativity Matters for Adults

As adults, we spend much of our time solving problems, managing responsibilities, and focusing on productivity.

Creative activities engage a different part of the mind.

Sketching encourages observation. Watercolor teaches flexibility. Pastels invite experimentation with color and texture. Mixed media encourages curiosity and creative play.

Working with real materials — pencils, paper, paint, texture, and color — creates a hands-on experience that many people find both grounding and refreshing.

Art classes aren't about perfection. They're about learning, exploring, experimenting, and making space for creativity in everyday life.
