Fall Leaf Doodle Tutorial

Fall is right around the corner, which means cooler weather, shorter days, and back to art school! To commemorate the coming of this marvelous season and everything it brings, we are celebrating with a tutorial for a fun autumnal leaf doodle!

To begin the drawing, we must first draw our base. We will start to do this by drawing two lines in the form of a cross, like so:

Then, draw an “X” shape between the area where the horizontal and vertical line of the cross meet. Ensure that the bottom of your “X” is shorter than the top. Once that is done, you have the base of your drawing!

Now we can start to draw the details of the leaf! We will begin by drawing the heads of lobes. To do this, we will draw a double curve shape on both the left and right of the lines. Do this for every line, like such:

Once this is done, we can start to connect each of the lobe heads together. We will do this by drawing curves that go from one end point of the double curve to the next, like this:

Now the top part of our leaf is done! We can now move on to drawing the stem of our leaf. To do this, we will thicken the line below the leaf head. Once this is done, we can thicken the bottom of the line to give the stem its characteristic shape.

We are almost finished with our doodle, and can already see it come together! Now is the time to add some details to our leaf. At this point, you can add whatever you’d like! Because we are going for a semi-realistic look here, we will only be adding veins.

Now we are done! Our final step is to trace the outline and details of the leaf!

And there is your doodle completed! Once you have gotten comfortable with this drawing, you can experiment with a variety of different shapes, sizes, mediums, and even colours! For the purpose of this tutorial, I drew this doodle digitally, but feel free to use supplies such as coloured pencils, crayons, or even watercolour.
